The Men’s team at Hove Rugby Club are taking on more than just tackles this November—they’re taking on the stigma that surrounds men’s mental health. With 77% of men experiencing anxiety or depression at some point in their lives, the squad wanted to set a powerful example for men and boys everywhere: talking about mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness.
This year, they’ve joined forces with Movember, the global campaign dedicated to improving men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Through a mix of moustache-growing, moustache-shaving, and most importantly, open conversations, the team has already raised over £1,400—a fantastic achievement that directly supports life-changing research and support services.
But for the players, this fundraiser is about more than the money. Throughout the month, team members have been sharing their own experiences, checking in on each other, and showing that vulnerability has a place both on and off the pitch. By speaking openly, they’re helping to normalise these conversations and creating a culture where men feel safe to reach out for help.
Their efforts remind us that mental health affects everyone, and small actions—like growing a moustache or starting a conversation—can make a big difference. The Hove RFC Men’s team are proving that when a community comes together with honesty, courage, and a bit of humour, real change can happen.
