The Hove U13s Reds travelled to Goddington Sports Ground for what was a significant fixture, marking the first time the squad has ever played against Westcombe Park. This friendly is intended to be the first in a recurring series, laying the groundwork for future competitive outings. The day was overcast but dry, providing decent conditions for the 12-a-side match, which consisted of two 25-minute halves.

The atmosphere was electric, boosted by fantastic support from the Hove Blues players who stayed on the sidelines after their own earlier fixture to cheer on their teammates. The team, co-captained by Austin and Billy, went into the match focused on executing a clear objective: improving the interplay between the forwards and the back line, with forwards carrying hard to set up the backs in wider channels.

The match was closely contested throughout, but the Reds' effective ball carrying proved decisive. Hove started strongly, with the tactical focus immediately paying dividends.

Ali secured an early try to get the Reds on the board. This was quickly followed up by scores from Henry, Austin, and Isaac L, ensuring that Hove went into the half-time break with a commanding lead and control of the match.

The second half was a more even affair, with Westcombe Park finding their stride. They matched Hove try-for-try in the second period, with both teams scoring two tries apiece. However, the Reds maintained their early advantage to secure a convincing 6-2 victory.

One of the standout moments came from a beautifully executed team move: good interplay between the forwards and backs resulted in space being created for Henry on the wing. His lightning fast pace was more than enough to burn the defence and run in a superb try in the corner.

A special mention must go to today’s Player of the Match, Billy. Billy was chosen for his fantastic work rate, powerful ball carrying, and the onfield leadership he demonstrated throughout the game, driving the team forward from start to finish.

Further commendations are due for Harry, Murdo, Laurie and Isaac L, who all put in valuable minutes for the Reds after having already featured in the earlier Blues match—a true testament to their commitment and sportsmanship.

Looking Ahead

The U13s now look forward to training at the Hove Rec next Sunday as they prepare to get their league campaign underway in November.

A big thank you goes out to Westcombe Park for hosting both matches today, and a massive appreciation to all the Hove parents and players for making the away trip to support the squad!
