Mud, Grit, and Gallant Defiance: Blues Shine in Chichester Rain

The Hove U13s Blues traveled to Chichester RFC this Sunday for a fiercely contested League encounter against a familiar rival, Chichester. The conditions were quintessential winter rugby, damp, cold, and increasingly muddy, providing a grueling test of character for both 16-man squads. Despite the deteriorating weather, the quality of rugby on display remained remarkably high as both sides fought tooth and nail for every inch of territory.

Hove ignited the match with incredible focus, the forwards setting a dominant tone from the first whistle. The scrum provided a rock-solid platform all afternoon, allowing the backs to play with confidence despite the slippery ball. Early pressure paid dividends when Enzo showcased his clinical finishing; his first try was a masterclass in balance along the right touchline, while his second saw him cut sharply inside to bamboozle the defense. Chichester responded with their own physical brand of rugby, but Hove’s defensive line, led by the returning Leo, who marked his comeback from injury with a massive early hit, held firm for long periods.

As the rain intensified in the second half, the game became a true test of the club's TREDS values. Despite facing several offside penalties, the Blues demonstrated immense Discipline and Teamwork during multiple defensive stands deep in their own 22. Albert was a constant threat with his powerful, direct running, consistently gaining vital ground through the middle. Thomas provided tactical excellence with his kicking and placement, while Murdo was a picture of composure at the back, reliably recovering deep kicks under significant pressure. The scoring was rounded off by a determined team effort finished by Guy, who showed great strength to power through two defenders in the corner.

While the final whistle saw Chichester take the win 7-5 in tries, the performance was a testament to the squad's development. The mutual respect between these two teams remains a highlight of the season; the interaction between the players at the post-match tea perfectly embodied the spirit of Sportsmanship. We extend our sincere thanks to the Chichester RFC coaches, players, and volunteers for their warm hospitality.

The Blues now look forward to returning to Hove to host East Grinstead.
